    Unusual Fitness Headphones

Earphones for water, cold, style and substance

Everyone is familiar with traditional headphones. They have headbands to hold them in place and speakers to direct music to the ears. There are high tech fitness styles and low-tech budget basics, but for the most part they look similar and serve the same purpose. But some earphones and headphones are a bit more unique.

If you have very specific needs, more than just wanting a pair of earphones that resists sweat or cancels out background noise, or even if you just like to be different, these unusual headphones are something to consider:

    Best for cold weather workouts

    • Lobz: Audio Ear Protectors - The all-weather nylon construction of these wrap-around headphones, combined with removable polyester/wool blend ear covers and a $30 price tag makes them a decent choice for days it’s not quite cold enough to a winter cap, but chilly enough that you won’t mind some fleece between your ears and the headphone speakers.

    Best for swimming laps

    • OtterBox: H2O Audio Waterproof Headphones - Hard to believe, but it’s true, someone actually created waterproof headphones. Thanks to form-fitting silicone earpieces these babies are waterproof up to three feet. If you’re an avid lap-swimmer or someone who enjoys doing water aerobics, they might be worth the $40 price tag. Just don’t take them with you off the diving board.

    Best for trendsetters

    • V-Moda: Vibe - This ultra-stylish in-ear set of earphones might be just what you need if you’re the type who puts on makeup before going to the gym. In colors like Gunmental, RedRoxx, La Mocha, Flashback Chrome and Midnight Blue, the Vibe Duo works as both a listening device and fashion statement. Not to worry, according to trustworthy reviews the Vibe canalbuds are as comfortable as they are sexy, not to mention having great sound. They might even be worth the $100 price tag without their great style.

    Best for “greenies”

    • Soltronix Headset Radio - If you get anxious just thinking about all the disposable batteries wasted powering MP3 players each year, worry no more. Sunlight powers up these FM radio headphones. One hour of sun exposure can translate in up to three hours of listening power. It’s a bulky set-up to be sure, but some women would gladly sacrifice size and style for the greater good. Besides, it only costs $40, imagine what you’ll save not having to buy batteries in the long run.
