Treadmill Equipment Considerations
Make sure the treadmill is the right fit
Choosing a treadmill isn’t just about whether it will fit in your house or how much it costs. It’s also about whether the treadmill fits you and your needs.
Important considerations
- Weight - Not how much the treadmill weighs but how much weight it holds. If you are close to a treadmill’s weight limit it might be wise to go with one that holds at least 50 pounds more.
- Incline - If you want to raise your calorie burning potential and really work your legs and butt, a treadmill with incline is essential. Most feature a max incline of between 10 to 15 percent, but NordicTrack Incline Trainers go far beyond with up to 50 percent incline ability.
- Comfort - Where a treadmill’s handles are located can mean all the difference. Some people prefer to hold side handles, while others prefer them in front. Handles may be also be different widths, made of different materials and situated at different heights. Take the time to decide what you find comfortable. If balance is an issue, side handlebars may be the best way to go. Comfort also has to do with how smooth the ride is.
- Safety - Some treadmills have safety mechanisms that consist of a magnet on a cord that attaches to your wrist or clothing. If you stumble or fall the magnet pulls away from the machine and stops the track.
- Water holder - Having H20 handy will keep workouts going smoothly. Make sure it’s easy to access and holds the bottle securely.
- Noise - If you like your workouts quiet or at least quiet enough that you can hear the television, make sure the machine will comply. A treadmill that’s too noisy just gives you an excuse to avoid it.
- Slow start - A treadmill belt that starts revolving slowly and builds up to the speed you set it for is a lot safer than one that jumps right up to 8 mph.
- Shock absorption - Treadmills with cushioning, flex or impact absorption can make working out easier on people with joint problems, but some prefer the feel of a harder surface.
Now that you know everything you need to, including what treadmill programs and console features are available, you shouldn’t have trouble finding exactly what you’re looking for.
