Press, Squat and Spot Racks
No need for a spotter
If you’ve ever heard someone talking about a power cage, power rack, squat rack or squat cage, they are all basically the same piece of equipment, used to help lifters perform heavy barbell lifts safely. The equipment is similar to the Smith machine but it doesn’t restrict the lifter’s movements as much.
What do squat racks, power cages look like?
Four posts stand on end at each corner of the rack. The two posts on each side are often attached together with metal bars all the way up, making the equipment look like a cage. Each side of the cage has some sort of a moveable bar catcher.
What is the purpose of a cage?
When lifting barbells there’s always the risk of dropping the weight and causing floor damage or injury, which is why many gym goers use a spotter. The cage works in place of a human spotter, catching the barbell if you find you can’t handle the weight mid-lift.
What exercises is a power cage used for?
Aside from the obvious - squats - power cages and squat racks help users perform safe curls, bench presses, upright rows, shrugs, calf raises and more.
Women who know the importance of compound moves and lifting heavier weights to keep their bodies trim and toned will find the power cage very beneficial. But if you don’t have much extra room in your home you’re probably better off using this equipment at the local gym.
What to look for in a rack
- Adjustable - Most cages and racks are height adjustable so you can perform a variety of moves. If it’s not adjustable, you might as well not bother. A rack that can be taken down for easy storage is also a plus.
- Size - Some power racks are made smaller for the home gym and will accommodate less weight and smaller lifters. Don’t spend more on a super heavy duty piece of equipment if you don’t need it. Make sure the rack will accommodate your length of barbell, especially if you lift with a bar that's shorter than most.
Cost
Some power cages are very pricey, costing in the neighborhood of $1000, but it’s also possible to find a more basic model for under $200 which is more than decent if you’re someone who spends a lot of time working out with free weights.
