Elliptical Stride and Resistance Methods
The importance of stride length and resistance
When choosing an elliptical trainer, certain things are equally as important to consider as price and warranty. For one thing, not all ellipticals are the same - the basics of how they are made can tell you a lot about how good the equipment really is.
Motion methods
Some elliptical-style machines, such as the Gazelle, use swinging footrests to provide their motion, and although they are called elliptical machines they don’t provide the same motion. Think of the elliptical shape, which is oval. A machine that moves in an elongated circular pattern is a true elliptical. Machines that move in a tight circular pattern or strictly back and forth won’t offer as smooth of a ride.
Look for an elliptical with a stride length that’s 16 to 18 inches minimum - longer if you’re taller than average or have long legs. As far as many people are concerned the longer the stride length, the better.
Newer models may have adjustable stride lengths to accommodate a variety of users.
Some elliptical pedals are rotated by a flywheel at the back of the machine (rear drive), while the front of the pedals is attached to rollers on a track or attached directly to the handles for synchronized movement. Others have a flywheel at the front of the machine, while rollers on the back of the pedal move on a track. Rear drive, which is used in high-end machines like Precor’s, is generally preferable. If the elliptical is front drive, make sure it has articulating pedals that angle as you move for a more natural feel. Ellipticals with the pedals attached directly to the back flywheel are some of the lowest quality options.
Resistance methods
Magnetic resistance offers a much smoother ride, but there are different types to choose from. The most basic type requires the user to manually change resistance. The next step is a magnetic brake controlled by a small motor. High end machines use ECB (eddy current brake) systems. Look for a machine that has a decent range of resistance levels if you want to continuously challenge yourself.
After you’ve set yourself a price range and decided what programs and console features you want, your decision should ultimately be based on the comfort and usability of the elliptical machine.
