Elliptical Programs and Console Features
Fun and functional features to consider
If you’ve been won over by the benefits an elliptical offers and have taken stride length and resistance methods into account, as well as knowing what you require in the way of equipment and comfort, you’d be forgiven for thinking all your work was done. But it’s not quite over yet. You still have to consider the features you’ll want to use when you get the equipment home.
Important console features
- Multiple users - Some ellipticals store user information so you can go immediately to your favorite pre-set. If you aren’t going to be the only one using it, look for a machine that stores info and programs for multiple users.
- Monitors and counters - Heart rate monitors can come in the form of straps that plug into the machine or special handles. Since you have to stay in contact with handles to monitor your heart rate, the strap is better option for women who’d rather glide hands-free. Calorie counters, although not always the most reliable, are just plain fun if nothing else. Counters that take age and weight into account are often better at providing accurate measures.
- Distance, speed, RPMs - If you want to know how far you’ve travelled, how many mph you’re going or how many revolutions per minute you’re making, look for a machine that displays these measurements.
- Time - Some consoles show time remaining while others show time elapsed, or both. Some will let you choose a time limit before you start, especially if you’re doing a pre-set program.
Program options
Some ellipticals come with preset programs that allow the user to set a target heart rate. During the time period chosen the machine raises and lowers resistance to keep the user within the target heart rate range. Other programs don’t require heart rate info, they just move the machine to preset inclines or resistance levels. These programs often have names like weight loss, fat burn, aerobic, interval or cross training.
- The best program an elliptical can offer is user-customized. You can set the program up exactly as you want and save it for future use.
Whatever program the elliptical is set to, it’s nice to be able to change resistance and incline at any time without having to start over and erase any progress that’s already been made.
Elliptical machines that allow you to pedal forward and backward (most do) are the perfect way to add even more variety.
If variable resistance and incline are included, make sure both can be adjusted electronically (as opposed to manually), otherwise you’ll have to put your workout on hold to make changes and you won’t be able to reap the benefits of interval training.
